Photos Used In Festival Promotional Video

Is it August yet?

The latest promotional video for this year’s Maui Photo Festival has been posted on their website and on Facebook, and in the mix of all the photos from the great photographers I met at last year’s event are two of my own.

As if you really need any further convincing that Maui is a perfect destination for a photography workshop like this, check out my ‘09 festival review on Maui by Photo and my enlightening experience during the sunset hula photoshoot.

Hopefully we’ll see you out there for this year’s event.

Mahalo,

My Photography Selections on Alltop

Alltop, all the top storiesTaking a little break from the daily photo posts as the full work week resumes and I dry off the skates after last week’s hockey theme.

I decided to revisit some of the dozens of blog feeds I have filed away in Google Reader under Photography and started thinking about ways to feature and share some of these here at the blog. What I came up with was starting a new MyAlltop page.

For those that might not have heard of Alltop yet, they have been described as an online magazine rack of sorts by some. In essence, it’s a collection of thousands of human-reviewed blog feeds and articles listed under hundreds of different categories like photography, Hawaii, and hockey just to name a few. No surprise I picked those topics as examples, eh? ;)

I first started checking out Alltop early last year when I was working on my first Maui website, and thought it was a pretty neat concept.  Then, over the summer, they released MyAlltop, which lets you create a profile and select your own favorite feeds from their directory. That what I’m started now for photonelly.

The photonelly MyAlltop

Now that the intro is out of the way, you can take a look at the first few blog feeds I’ve added to the photonelly MyAlltop, with more to come soon. There are a few other ideas I’m looking at with using this service, so this may only be the beginning.

If you know of or have a photography related website (or any website for that matter) that you’d like to have reviewed and added to Alltop, visit their Submissions page to find out more.

Thoughts?

Do you use Alltop already, or have any thoughts about the service? I’m interested in hearing of others out there have similar MyAlltop pages that would want to swap lists and share some of their favorites as well. If I get enough responses, I might even create a list of those MyAlltop pages on the sidebar here as well.

Now Viewing: Legion Photo

Legion Photo LogoFresh to the web, I wanted to share a new site that was recently launched by a few of the great people I met at the ‘09 Maui Photo Festival, Legion Photo.

The Legion Photo website is a stunning collection of photographs from nine very talented, and very brave, men and women who took their cameras into combat, fighter planes, and more dangerous situations than most other photographers would dream of. The result is a candid, captivating, intense, and emotional view into the lives and sacrifices that our nation’s true heroes make to keep our freedom safe.

I had the extreme pleasure of getting to fly with two of the photographers featured at Legion Photo, Stacy Pearsall and Andy Dunaway in September when they led a series of aerial shoots over Maui by helicopter. They were some of the nicest people you’ll ever met, and following along with them online after the workshops, they do so much to give back to the veterans community, it’s amazing.

Their New Mission

It takes a lot of talent and dedication to do what the photographers, or legionographers as they’re referred to, featured on Legion Photo do behind the camera. They have taken their own individual experiences and come together to offer a wide range of commercial photography, video, and creative services. Given the locations and conditions they have shot under in their military careers, I can’t imagine there’s a job out there they couldn’t handle.

More from Legion Photo

In addition to the photos and profiles (coming soon) on their website, you can also interact with Legion Photo on Facebook, Twitter, and their blog. Be sure to check out the links below and let them (and me) know what you think of their work.

Thanks,
– Kris

Now Browsing: Digital Photography School

I wanted to take a quick moment to share a site and blog that I recently discovered that I’ve grown rather fond of relatively quickly.

Digital Photography School – digital-photography-school.com
With a recent site re-design, DPS features a great arrangement of high quality content broken down into three main areas:
  • Photography Tips
  • Cameras and Gear
  • Post-Production
Not only is it a nice reminder that there is so much involved with digital photography these days, but it gives their readers the option to navigate directly to what they happen to be looking for at a particular moment. In the hunt for a new point-and-shoot?  Maybe planning a photo shoot and want some tips before you go?  DPS makes it easy to find just what you’re looking for.
Perhaps what I’m drawn to the site itself is the blog area and the different tips and reviews that they feature in their RSS feed. I still have so much to learn when it comes to both shooting in different situations and editing photos after the fact, this site has become very useful for me.
Sounds like it might be helpful for you, or you want to learn more?  Check out the About DPS page and be sure to grab the feed while you’re there. Even if you don’t dive right into the site at first, the daily posts that come through your favorite feed reader will certainly keep you interested.

Now Sharing on Hawaii Photography

Ka'anapali BeachI found a great site for Hawaii photography fans and photographers alike, named, what else…
Hawaii Photography.

After browsing their site and seeing some of the most stunning Hawaii photos around, I decided to fill out the registration form and was accepted. I uploaded a handful of photos today and will probably add a few more each day during this week off. You can view the photos I’ve posted there on my profile page.

The site has a good mix of professional and amatuer photographers, many of whom live in Hawaii (which I hope to do some day, too). There is also a nice variety of portraits, landscape, and nature photographs, and a few forums and groups for each of the different islands. Not bad for a site that currently has less than 60 members.

So if you’re looking for my very best from Maui, be sure to check them out. I know I’m way down on the experience scale compared to my new co-members at Hawaii Photography. I hope I can continue to hold my own, make a few new friends, and get some great tips before my next Maui trip in February.
