Subject: Beaches
There's a fun comment on the About Me page at my Maui Wall Candy site. It explains how I've grown up playing hockey in Chicago all my life and now I spend my vacations in a tropical paradise.
I never really was a beach person, or even a sit-in-the-sun-all-day person until I got married. Now, one of my hobbies as a Maui visitor and as a photographer is to visit new beaches with each trip, usually upwards of 2-3 in a two week period. Afterall, I have to reserve time for my favorite beaches, too.
Each beach is different, and they also have many things in common. I love trying to capture the waves as they wash up against the sand, and the long views of the water meeting the sand from one end of a beach to the other.
While Cindy is usually laid out on the beach towel or sitting nearby reading her book, I'm usually barefoot walking up and down with my camera getting over a hundred shots per beach. I can't explain it, I just have so much fun doing it.
The Longest Beach
There's a beach in South Maui that is called Big Beach. Although that isn't the official name, it's about 2/3 mile from one end to another, so you can understand why people call it that.
It took me about 20 minutes just walking from one end to the other, taking picture after picture. The beach is so big and there are so many open spaces to get just the beach. There is also many people doing things like boogie boarding, playing volleyball or freesbie, or just sitting in beach chairs enjoying a cold one. All great subjects to capture in my viewfinder.
Multi-colored Beaches
Because of Hawaii's unique origins and tropical environments, there are beaches of all colors on Maui. In addition to the the normal white sandy and sunny golden beaches you see throughout the world, I have also visited black sand beaches and red sand beaches while visiting Maui. There are even one or two green sand beaches out there somewhere which I haven't found yet, but I'm working on it.
Beaches to Date
As with all things Maui, there is a Beaches section that lists out the different beaches I have visited in our trips to the Valley Isle. To date, it features nine different beaches on every part of Maui that I have been to and photographed, including some stunning shots from high above courtesy of Google Maps. Something worth checking out if you like beaches, too.
