Location: Door County

My newest location for a wide range of photo opprotunities, Door County, Wisconsin is only about a 4 hour drive north of Chicago.

Just after our first extended weekend up north, I was welcomed with so many different things to photograph, from sunsets to local festivals and even the start of the autumn leaves changing colors. With a climate as diverse as in Chicago, gettings snapshots from throughout the different seasons is going to be a new project for me, and on that will certainly test out my creativity and shooting versatility.

While Maui is still No Ka 'Oi for me, I am excited about having Door County be a backup location for many of the things I enjoy photographing. While not as sentimental or spiratiual as in Maui, the sunsets and night skies in Door County are nothing to shy away from, and being such a short distance from where I live, future trips up north will certainly help with the practice I need to make the photos from our next Maui trip even better.

What Maui Doesn't Have

Although there are similarities in what I like to shoot in both locations, Door County has a few things that Maui doesn't in abundance. Take for example, ... I don't know, ... Snow!!! Growing up a big hockey player and still a life long fan, I love winter. Well, at least the first month or two anyway. Getting to take photos of full, glorious winter wonderlands is going to be something to look forward to as the summers pass and the shorts get packed back into the closet.

But before there's winter, the colors of Autumn are just as eye catching, just as much fun to capture in the viewfinder, and just about everywhere you look come October. :)

Just the Beginning

So far, my wife and I have only had one weekend up in Door County, but we're planning another one for December. Being so close by and just an absolute bargain compared to what we pay for going to Maui, I can easily see us going up north at least 4 times a year. They say practice makes perfect, and I'm excited at the prospect of having so much variety and frequency in which to practice with.

Before you know it, the numbers of photos in my portfolio from Door County is going to really build out, and while not as exhaustive as Maui for sure, it will be more than I could possibly put together just shooting around in my local neighborhood.
