Subject: Sunsets

Sunsets can be many things. They mark the end of a the day, the beginning of the night, and the endless cycle that follows every person every where on the planet.

Depending on where you are in the world at sunset, it can trigger many different moods, too. Under the right conditions, the warm orange glow of a the sun setting in the distance can have a romantic feeling to it. While other times, cooling purples and soft blues foster up a calming and peaceful atmosphere to start your evening with.

I love shooting sunsets in Maui because everywhere on the island has a perfect view. And there's something about seeing the sun over the horizon of a vast ocean that gives it a special meaning.

More than Maui

Maui isn't the only place where I'm attracted to photographing at sunset. On a past trip to the Bahama's, there were great shots of this day ending event, from setting behind the city of Miami as we left for sea to being out in the Caribbean. I keep getting back to that water thing, I know.

We also have just recently been introduced to the much closer Door County in Wisconsin, which is only a few hours north of us in Chicago. With miles of green and open coastline, sunsets are a popular activity all year round. We've added a few shots from our first visit, but I have a feeling we'll be returning to "the Door" rather frequently because it is so nearby.

More than Photos

One of the fun things you'll see a lot with sunsets is time lapse footage of that magical event. I tried that this past April once I learned how to hook up my DSLR to my laptop. It took a few attempts and I made a few mistakes in the beginning. I posted the end result at Flickr, so you can judge for yourself. I think I'm going to be having fun with time lapse photos in other areas, too.
